Concentration Camps and the Gulag

For our class on the concentration camps and the gulags, please come to class having read the two documents.

Please PRINT out the two documents. If you don’t have a copy of the document, you won’t be allowed to stay!

Here are the documents, the first of which you may already have read, though it wasn’t required then and is required now:

The Gulag Archipelago

Primo Levi – The Drowned and the Saved

As you read through them, here are some questions for you to consider:

  1. How do these two documents differ in tone? Which one sounds more emotional, more clinical, more “objective”?
  2. What do these documents have to tell us about human nature, or survival?
  3. How, specifically, did these two individuals survive?

Recall, also, that this work here will help you in your preparation for one of the exam essay questions as well as the key terms for our midterm.
